Top comic Shappi coming to Chiddingly

Shappi Khorshandi

Shappi Khorshandi

ONE OF Britain’s rising comedy stars is headlining at this year’s Chiddingly Festival.

Shappi Khorshandi has been hailed as the country’s best young female comedian and has won an army of fans thanks to show-stealing performances on TV’s Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.

The Iranian-born performer’s memoirs, A Beginner’s Guide to Acting English, was released back in 2009, and has a wealth of material not readily available to most of her contemporaries.

She was bought up in London after her family fled Iran following the Islamic Revolution as her satirist father, Hadi, criticised the Ayatollah, and has performed a host of Edinburgh shows to critical acclaim.

A coup for the organisers of Chiddingly Festival, Korshandi is set to appear on October 1.

Elsewhere in the line-up at this year’s showcase – the 33rd annual appearance – is a stack of big names in the field of jazz, folk, poetry and theatre.

The festival gets underway on September 21 with the appearance of Bettany Hughes – an award-winning broadcaster whose television films on the ancient world have now been seen by more than 100 million people worldwide.

Using a unique combination of archaeological, geological and historical clues, Hughes will attempt to recreate the world of Socrates as part of festival presentation, The Hemlock Cup.

There is also appearances by Gilad Atzmon – returning to Chiddingly this time alongside Ros Stephen’s Sigamos String Quartet – and folk specialists The Carnival Band.

There will also be a classical concert performed by The City Musick, as well as an all day beer festival on September 24 – complete with a Middle Eastern dance workshop and drumming sessions.

Other highlights include comedy from Noise Next Door and Laura Lexx (September 22), Sea Gypsies dance display (September 25) and a Poetry in the Pub session on September 28.
