A YOUNG Hailsham cyclist is getting in gear for the top and is being supported by her local gym.

Kim English, 16, is already well on her way to national and international cycling success and is training hard to emulate the success of her Olympic medal-winning heroines Laura Trott and Lizzie Armitstead.

Her training has been given a big boost by Freedom Leisure, which has placed her on its Talented Athlete Support Scheme that supports emerging sporting talent in Sussex.

Kim has access to all the 33 Freedom Leisure centres across Sussex, Kent and Surrey, but is focusing her training at Hailsham Leisure Centre.

She said, “The support from Freedom Leisure is a great boost to my training and confidence.

“My training is really intense, and because there are no other cyclists of my level locally, I have to do all my training sessions alone.

“As a member of Freedom Leisure Hailsham I have access to its excellent gym, where I train my core and upper body twice a week.

“I really enjoy these sessions, and it’s refreshing to have some company while I work out there.”

Kim joined Preston Park Youth Club in Brighton when she was just eight years old, and started racing a year later in the Sussex Track League.

She has since enjoyed great success with her sporting highlight being her first national title in 2010 at the National Cyclocross Championships.

Dominic Horner, Freedom Leisure manager, said, “We are delighted to accept Kim on to our Talented Athlete Support Scheme, having watched her steady progress and impressive performances over the last few years. Young athletes have great demands on their finances, so by offering free membership to Hailsham Leisure Centre we aim to ease some of Kim’s training costs, while supporting her with top-notch facilities and experienced staff.”
