Tom sets off on a charity trek round British coastline

A young adventurer is aiming to fulfil a childhood ambition when he sets off on a 7,000-mile walk around Britain’s coastline in aid of Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance

Tom Brabham, 22, from Hailsham, starts today (Tuesday) and plans to complete the trek in 10 months before arriving back home in time for Christmas.

He will start his epic journey from Eastbourne Pier at 9am when family and friends will gather at the iconic landmark to bid him farewell just a week after his 22nd birthday.

The former Hailsham Community College pupil has been inspired by a book called Turn Right at Land’s End by John Merrill - the first man to successfully achieve the feat in 1978.

He said, “I’m really nervous at the moment, not about the walk, but leaving my girlfriend and family behind. I’ve been away from them longer than this when I moved to Manchester for a few years but I was going back and forth. They will come and see me along the route but it’s not going to be easy.”

Tom is aiming to raise £3,000 for the Air Ambulance and can be sponsored at www.shoelace-express.co.uk and www.facebook.com/shoelaceexpress.

One online donor, Andy Hibbert, wrote: “I was an admirer of John Merrill when I was tramping around the Dark Peak. Good luck in your trek.”
