TLC TEDDIES FOR A&E CHILDREN

POORLY children at Eastbourne's A&E department will all receive a new teddy bear to help lift their spirits.

The new initiative is being spearheaded by Freemasons across Sussex and is aimed at making a trip to the hospital a more pleasant experience for sick youngsters.

All children needing treatment in the A&E department will receive one of the teddy bears and already the scheme is being hailed as a great success.

Carl Goldsmith, worshipful master of a masonic lodge in Sussex, said he hoped children would find a trip to hospital less frightening.

'We want this scheme to go on running indefinitely and it means children will receive something to take their minds off what they're going through,' said Mr Goldsmith.

'Through the Freemasons' Sussex for Sussex scheme, we are giving money to local charities and this TLC appeal is just one of those.

'We hope that it will make a big difference to the young patients.'

The bears are all paid for by Freemasons across Sussex and the scheme is being run in other hospital casualty departments too.

The Freemasons have also provided A&E staff with a large plaque which will go up in the resuscitation area of the department.

Delly Dickson, A&E matron at Eastbourne District General Hospital, said, 'This will make all the difference to children coming into the department because it is a very traumatic experience for everyone involved.

'Teddy bears have the power to make children feel a lot better and we would like to extend our warmest thanks to the Sussex Freemasons for bringing this initiative to our hospital.

'I'm sure it will be warmly welcomed by everyone.'
