THOUSANDS of pounds has been raised for charity after an East Dean resident scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in memory of a friend.

Tina Woodley-Roberts was inspired to begin fundraising for the charity Pancreatic Cancer UK when her neighbour Jane Delaney died of the disease just three months after she was diagnosed.

She hosted a series of events to boost the charity’s coffers and finished off with the trek in July.

The Michel Dene Road resident and her pal decided to climb the Rongai route up the mountain as the summit climb was on Jane’s birthday July 12.

The pair passed through rainforests and witnessed some ‘superb views’ on the seven-day challenge which saw them trek with a group of guide, cooks and porters, for up to 18 hours a day.

Tina suffered from altitude sickness and felt tired and weak but she and her pal decided there was ‘no way’ they weren’t going to reach the summit.

After the experience Tina said, “To stand on top of the continent was a stunning and unforgettable experience.

“Climbing Kilimanjaro is the hardest thing either of us have ever done, it was exhausting yet so rewarding.”

Before the climb the duo had been organising several events including an Auction of Promise which was supported by local resident and set designer John Napier.

Money was also raised from other events including a wine tasting and quiz night, which helped take the total to more than £15,000.

Tina would like to thank everyone who supported the cause.
