Thugs stab bus driver with syringe
A bus driver was stabbed in the hand with a hypodermic needle during an attempted robbery.
Four men wearing hooded tops boarded the bus at Winkney Farm on Saturday night.
The driver continued along Willingdon Drove before one of the men approached him and asked for money.
During the incident the driver was punched and stabbed with a needle. He now faces a wait of up to six months to find out if he has been infected by anything carried on the needle.
The robbers got off the bus close to The Mill pub and did not get away with any money.
The police were called at 9.55pm, shortly after the incident, and the driver was later taken to the Eastbourne District General Hospital, where he stayed overnight.
The driver, who has not been named, has been signed off work.
Steve Barnett, Eastbourne Buses managing director, said, "This is an appalling breach of the safety of one of our employees. Our thoughts are with him.
"We are working with Sussex Police to trace the robbers. We will now be fitting safety screens to vehicles used on late night services as a result of this incident as it is essential that our drivers can work in an environment where their safety is not put at risk."
Two of the men are thought to be in their 30s and two in their early 20s. All were white and at least one was thought to have spoken with a Liverpudlian accent.
Any information about this crime can be passed to Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial number 1755 of April 12.
