Temporary shops plan after Langney Shopping Centre roof collapse
Eastbourne Borough Council is working with retailers to aid local residents following the closure of Langney Shopping Centre due to a partial collapse of the roof.
An application by Boots the Chemist to open a temporary facility in the car park of the shopping centre to meet the needs of the community, particularly for medical prescriptions, is being supported by the council and is now being considered by the planning department.
While the council does not own or maintain the shopping centre, it is keen to assist retailers where possible and is awaiting reports from the centre owner about the progress of repairs.
Boots is in discussions with the council to obtain permission to open a mobile shopping unit to sell basic goods and process prescription requests.
Council leaders are now calling on other businesses from the centre which are keen to open temporary units to make contact to request temporary planning permission.
A council spokesperson said, “We are acutely aware of how devastating the roof collapse has been for many business at what should have been the busiest time of the year.
“Wherever possible we will do our best to help meet the needs of the local community and that includes considering appropriate requests for permission to place temporary units in the car park to allow limited trading.
“We want to make sure that residents have access to important local services and I would therefore urge businesses within the centre to contact us to see if we can grant temporary planning permission.”
A spokesperson for Boots said, “The store serves the local Langney community with their prescriptions and used to see 1000 people per week; these local residents are now having to travel to Sovereign Harbour, the nearest Boots store, which is causing them difficulties. Being within the Shopping Centre area will allow them easier access to the prescription service that they need.
“The pharmacy was an integral part of the local community providing urgent medication as well as advice for patients on health related issues.
“The pharmacy also provided a number of pharmacy services for the local community such as medicines reviews, a new medicine service and supervised consumption of medication for patients.”
Anyone wishing to apply for temporary planning permission should contact the council on 01323 410000.
