Temporary library for people of Langney
A temporary library is being set up for the people of Langney during the closure of the local shopping centre.
Residents are anxiously waiting to hear when Langney Shopping Centre will be rebuilt following the collapse if the roof just before Christmas.
Last week, the company which owns the shopping centre, London and Associated Management Services, said it hoped to invest and extend during the rebuilding process. While a planning application is expected to be lodged with Eastbourne borough Council soon, residents and business people within the centre are still uncertain on any timescale.
In the meantime, the popular twice weekly market has returned to the car park, both Boots and Barclays have set up temporary units on the site, a community cafe has been organised in the local church and now the much-missed library will return to the area.
The library, like the community cafe, will be set up in St Barnabas Church - right next to Langney Shopping Centre.
The library will open its doors this Saturday (February 23).
It will operate from 9.30am to 1pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
Councillor Alan Shuttleworth , has helped to set up both the temporary library and the community cafe.
He said, “This is a great example of the community working together.
The library will be operating in St Barnabas Church, and on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings customers can pop into the community cafe at the same venue to have a drink and a chat.”
In addition the mobile office will operate on the car park next to the church on a Wednesday from 9.30am to 1pm.
Cllr Shuttleworth added,
“We are grateful to St Barnabas Church
“This provides an opportunity for people to meet up while the centre is closed.”
