Teenagers prepare for trip to Ecuador
Six youngsters from Eastbourne Academy are planning a trip to Ecuador in 2014 and have launched a fundraising campaign.
The teenagers from the secondary school in Hampden Park are hoping to broaden their horizons, learn about other cultures and help the local people at the same time.
Alvaro Ferreira, Sabrina Kingaby, Joe Alexander, Ashley Wilkinson, Levi Sharrod-Scott, Chloe Smith and Jordan Patterson are due to make the trip with Camps International for one month in July/August 2014 .
Camp International is a scheme which aims to promote education, conservation and construction in rural areas across the world.
The young people from Eastbourne Academy do not yet know what project they will be involved in, but in the past participants have helped with building schools and planting trees in areas with deforestation.
Lynne Guyton is the teacher from Eastbourne Academy who will be taking the group out to South America. She took a group of students to Borneo last year and says she is delighted to be able to take part in another Camp International project.
She said, “I just know it is going to be a great adventure for them.
“It will be fun and exciting but at the same time they will be giving something back beyond the community they live in.
“It will be a brilliant cultural exchange.”
Levi Sharrod-Scott, one of the young people taking part, said, “It is not just a holiday, it will be hard work.”
All the young people are now launching a fundraising campaign to fund the trip. There are various raffles and fundraising activities going on within the school but The pupils are taking a Boxing Day dip in the sea and are hoping local business to sponsor them.
In exchange for £100 sponsorship the teenagers will wear a t-shirt with the company logo for the sea swim and subsequent fundraisers. To help call Ms Guyton on 514900.
