Most 13-year-old boys spend the summer holidays playing with their friends, but Robert Wooler, and his dad Ian were busy mountain biking nearly 100 miles across Scotland for charity.

In recognition of their feat, the father and son team have been named August’s Residents of the Month.

Ian and Robert were often joined by their collie Toby along the 90 mile cycle between Fort William and Inverness, in aid of the Sussex Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus (SASBAH).

Ian has Spina Bifida and has been helped by SASBAH in the past, so the pair were keen to raise money for the charity.

So far they have collected £735, although money is still being donated.

Ian said, “We had an incredible adventure and even though the ride was much harder than we had anticipated, the scenery and nature made the physical exertions pale into insignificance.

“I would like to thank all those who sponsored us or donated money, including Intercon Scaffolding, Berwick Service Station, Revival Cycles and Hailsham Chiropractic Centre.

“I’d also like to thank my parents who kept us going with supplies of food and drink.

“And I must say a really big thank you to Robert – you made me a very happy and proud father.”

The Resident of the Month Award is sponsored by Advanta Chartered Accountants and the Eastbourne Herald.

To recognise their efforts, Ian and Robert were presented with a certificate by Michael Cottingham, a director at Advanta.

They didn’t want to leave Toby out, so he went along too.

Michael said, “Ian and Robert have undertaken a challenging bike ride and raised a marvellous amount for SASBAH, for which they should be congratulated.

“Toby the dog took part too, and it’s the first time a dog has been part of our Resident of the Month presentation.”

As part of their reward, Ian and Robert are looking forward to a complimentary meal at Ridgways restaurant in Meads.
