Teenage driver fined after a head on collision

A young driver who was involved in a head-on collision told magistrates he ‘made a silly mistake’.

Christopher Abercrombie, of Bellbanks Road, Hailsham, has avoided having to take a re-test after he was given four penalty points rather than six, following the incident on November 11 last year.

Eastbourne magistrates heard that the 19-year-old was heading towards Hawkswood Road and witnesses said he had overtaken them at some speed. When he got to the junction he failed to stop and was involved in a head on collision with a Mercedes. The driver of that car said Abercrombie had ‘come straight at him’ and he had ‘no chance’ to avoid the collision.

Abercrombie, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, when he appeared in court on Tuesday this week. Addressing the magistrates he said, “I would like to say sorry to the court and sorry to the people I have caused inconvenience to. I’m going to make some changes and I hope you’ll give me a second chance. I’m going to drive sensibly. I’m 19-years-old, I made a silly mistake. I realise that now.”

His father also addressed the court during the hearing, adding, “I think the whole experience of being summoned to court has had a huge impact on him.

“His insurance is high anyway because of his age and the financial impact is going to be huge. He knows his actions caused other people inconvenience and he bitterly regrets the whole incident. I hope he can learn a lesson from this.”

Abercrombie was fined £100 and must also pay a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs. He also received four points on his licence and had been warned by magistrates if he receives two more within a set period he will have to re-take his test.
