Supermarket wars break out in Eastbourne

Morrisons

Morrisons

The town’s new Morrisons store is set to open its doors on Monday (October 22) sparking a war between the town’s other large supermarkets.

The Morrisons superstore will open in Lottbridge Drove, Hampden Park - just a short distance away from both Sainsbury’s in Cross Levels Way and Tesco, which is also in Lottbridge Drove.

Building work to complete the supermarket started in January this year after planning permission was granted by Eastbourne Borough Council in 2011.

The former Anglo Dutch Meats site had to be demolished to make way for the new Morrisons store and Eastbourne Car Auctions had to move to Brampton Road to enable the development to take place.

The new store has been welcomed by Eastbourne Borough Council because it will provide hundreds of employment opportunities for local residents.

As part of a local labour initiative negotiated by Eastbourne Borough Council, Morrisons committed to use local businesses in the construction phase as well as employing local people in the store.

The store will open its doors at 9am. The ribbon will be cut by Chris Bradshaw, headteacher of Heron Park Community Primary School.

John Howell, manager of the new store, said, “Our team have worked really hard and been trained in specialist areas such as wine, butchery and bakery.

“We now can’t wait to open our doors and show off the store to our customers. We’re sure they’ll love what they see and we look forward to welcoming them on Monday morning.”

The opening of Morrisons has seen Tesco increase its advertising locally and Sainsbury’s is undergoing a major refurbishment.

Sainsbury’s is the closest major supermarket to the new Morrisons and it will be shutting its doors at 6pm on Tuesday (October 23), the day after Morrisons opens, to complete its facelift.

It will remain closed for one week – reopening on October 3
