Street transformed with birch and hornbeams
A STREET on the Town Farm estate has become the first in Hailsham to be turned into a tree-lined avenue as part of a new pilot project.
A dozen trees were planted in St. Mary's Avenue at the end of last week as part of Hailsham's bid for honours in the South and South East in Bloom competition.
The common birch, Himalayan birch and Swedish whitebeam trees which now line the road have been funded by Hailsham Town Council, local residents and the Hailsham Lions Club, which donated 360 towards the project.
The town's South and South East in Bloom bid team hopes to plant trees in other roads in Hailsham.
Civic dignitaries, including Hailsham mayor Ian Haffenden, Wealden District Council chairman Sylvia Martin and the deputy Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, David Allum, gathered for the official planting ceremony on Friday.
Deputy mayor Jeff Bentley-Astor, who heads up Hailsham's South and South East in Bloom bid committee, said, "It's great news that these new trees have been planted at St Mary's Avenue.
"The planting of the trees there is the first step in improving the local environment of Hailsham in years to come and I am extremely grateful for the money from our sponsors which has made this whole initiative possible."
"The committee is now turning its attention towards year two of the tree planting programme and is keen to hear of new sites in Hailsham that residents feel would benefit from trees."
A spokesperson for the Town Farm Residents' Association said, "There has been considerable interest in the tree-planting scheme generally and we hope that those who have joined in will feel this new avenue of trees belongs to their community and will watch it grow over the years."
