Morrisonsopened its doors to the public on Monday (October 22).

The supermarket opened on Lottbridge Drove in Hampden Park following many months of building work.

The store’s general manager , Mayor of Eastbourne Cllr Mike Thompson and Chris Bradshaw, the head of Heron Park School attended an opening ceremony.

Mr Bradshaw was invited to cut the ribbon because Heron Park, which recently became an academy, is the closest school to the new supermarket.

Pupils from HeronPark School were also invited to celebrate the opening of the new store.

The opening ceremony took place at around 8.30am, as customers waited to enter the new supermarket.

The Morrisons store has been welcomed by the council and the town’s MP Stephen Lloyd, who were pleased to see enterprise and employment opportunities in the town.

Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council David Tutt said, “The opening of the new Morrisons store is fantastic news for Eastbourne in so many ways.

“The store looks terrific inside and out and has added more competition to the supermarket sector in the town, which can only be good news for residents.

“Best of all, it has created over 300 jobs for local people.”

There were queues down Lottbridge Drove when Morrisons opened, as shoppers flocked to see the new store.

The opening of Morrisons has sparked a war among the supermarkets in the town.

Both Sainsbury’s and Tesco, have both increased their advertising locally in recent weeks.

Sainsbury’s is located just a short distance away form the new Morrisons store in Cross Levels Way and is currently closed for a refurbishment.

Tesco is also in Lottbridge Drove, only a short drive from the new Morrisons store.

Tesco and Sainsbuy’s will be battling for customers in the coming weeks.
