Stole food to feed drug habit

A DRUG addict who stole meat to pay for her habit has appeared in court.

Holly Pennington, of Ashford Road, Eastbourne, stole from Sainsbury’s and ASDA.

The 25-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to the theft at ASDA and also admitted the Sainsbury’s theft when she appeared at Eastbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday (July 31).

Pennington stole meat and cosmetics to the value of £126.99 from ASDA on June 30 and then three legs of lamb from Sainsbury’s in the Arndale Centre on July 15.

The items from the first offence were recovered at the scene but on the second occasion Pennington was found with the items in Susans Road where she dropped them and damaged the packaging, meaning that the meat, worth £76.75, could not be resold.

Robert Gregory, defending, said, “She has a severe drugs problem. She wants support and wants to take any support available to her.”

The court heard Pennington was on a methadone prescription to try and address her drug problems. Magistrates adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

Pennington will next appear at Eastbourne Magistrates Court on August 22 to be sentenced for the two shoplifting offences.

She was granted bail with conditions not to enter Sainsbury’s in the Arndale Centre.
