Start date set for work on Lottery funded skate park

WORK will begin later this month on the controversial skatepark in Manor Gardens.

A noise prevention fence was due to be put up this week and the work on building the park is due to start on February 27.

Eastbourne Borough Council, which is backing the skatepark, said four companies had put in a tender to carry out the work and the contract has been awarded.

The skatepark is being paid for using Lottery funding and is estimated to be costing £85,000.

A council spokesperson said, “The skaters have unanimously chosen their preferred option and the scheme will be relocated to the furthest part of the court behind the cafe.”

The work is expected to be completed by mid-March.

The plans to put the skatepark in Manor Gardens caused uproar last year with residents and protesters saying it should be situated elsewhere within the town.

They fear it will ruin the tranquil setting of Manor Gardens and lead to anti social behaviour. Last minute attempts to put it instead in Old Town Recreation Ground or on land in Cross Levels Way were unsuccessful.

Eastbourne’s mayor Carolyn Heaps led the skaters’ calls for the facility to go into Manor Gardens and the plans received unanimous backing from her Liberal Democrat colleagues on the Cabinet and Planning committees.

The basketball court equipment is to be re-located to one of the adjoining tennis courts and the cost is included as part of the £85,000 budget.
