AN INDIAN restaurant in Eastbourne has beaten off hot competition to be shortlisted for Britain’s ‘Curry Oscars’.
The Spice Garden, in Old Town, is the only restaurant in Eastbourne on the shortlist – and one of only three across Sussex.
Owner Abdul Kadir and his team will learn if they have scooped the top prize at the end of the month, when the winners of the 2011 British Curry Awards will be announced at the Battersea Evolution in London.
A total of 2,700 restaurants were entered for the awards from a record 68,000 public nominations.
And 100 made the shortlist across the whole country.
Spice Garden is a family-run business which has been going for 15 years.
Mr Kadir said, “It’s good news. I’m really thrilled and really honoured to be nominated as well as shortlisted.”
Awards organiser Enam Ali MBE said, “This is the seventh year of the British Curry Awards and the standards get higher every year. To reach the shortlist is a tremendous achievement.
“Interest in the competition has been greater than ever this year. It just goes to show the tremendous support there is out there for Britain’s favourite food.”
This year’s awards dinner at the Battersea Evolution will be hosted by TV celebrity chef James Martin and attended by around 1,600 restaurateurs, VIP guests and celebrities.
Prime Minister David Cameron dubbed the awards the ‘Curry Oscars’ when he attended the awards dinner in 2009.

It just shows our Indian Restaurant in the Harbour came no near the Spice Garden. to be nominated - time to reflect!!.. Sam Sweiry in the North Harbour
