The owner of a clothes shop in Little Chelsea says he is ‘sickened’ that he has been the victim of two break-ins in as many weeks.

Lee Sharp, who has run Arcade opposite Eastbourne Library in Grove Road for the past six years, now has his windows boarded up after the break-in during the early hours of Sunday (October 14).

Criminals smashed the window of the clothes shop and grabbed various items of clothing from the window display.

The 43-year-old said, “It has been a smash and grab on both occasions. The first time they threw a paving slab through the window so they could steal clothes.

“The previous incident was just two weeks before and I feel sickened this is happening so often.”

Lee said he felt the Grove Road area had gone downhill recently.

He said, “I have had people in here trying to steal things. It seems to be a recent thing because it used to be really nice here but I think things are going downhill in this area and I have been making enquiries to move in to the Arndale Centre.

“Once you are in the Arndale Centre and they lock it up, your shop is safe and you don’t need to worry.”

For now, Lee has had to have his window boarded up and he will have to pay for a replacement soon.

He says, following this second break-in, he must spend thousands of pounds installing shutters and CCTV to protect his Grove Road shop.

Lee told the Herald he feels his clothes shop is being targeted.

He said, “We sell up-market, expensive brands such as Superdry.

“These are the sort of things people can sell on quickly in the pub.

“It is unbelievable. They will probably be selling these stolen clothes for about a tenner to make some quick cash and they are worth so much more than that.”

Lee is urging anyone who is offered cheap items of clothing to get in touch with the police
