Sir to hold his breath diving

A GEOGRAPHY teacher who can hold his breath underwater for almost eight minutes is hoping to take on the best in the world at his chosen sport.

Dave King, 35, who has joined the teaching staff at St. Bede's Senior School, is currently the UK's number one male freediver.

Freediving sees competitors descend under water on a single breath of air and is split into a number of disciplines.

Among Dave's achievements has been staying underwater for seven minutes and 45 seconds. He gained third place in the UK depth diving competition where he swam 30 metres underwater on one breath, without any aids such as fins.

Dave, who has been freediving for six years, said, "These were shallow depths for me as I have just started to train again after a long lay off due to work.

"I am just trying to get back into training after starting a busy new job at St Bede's Senior School where I teach geography.

"I have held three previous UK records in freediving and currently hold the UK constant weight record to 80 metres, or 266 feet, which I achieved in Sharm-El-Sheikh last year, just before competing at the World Championships."

Dave said his aim was to reach 90 metres this time around. He is also appealing for support so he can improve his training regime.

He said, "I am shamelessly after some exposure and a chance of some sponsorship.

"I am trying to get some pool time in the Brighton, Peacehaven or Lewes area to train and go for some new UK records.

"I would love see if any local businesses would like to be associated with my quest to gain more UK records."
