The future of Langney Shopping Centre is looking uncertain after the company that owns it said it had no idea when it will reopen.

Structural engineers are still compiling a report in the aftermath of the centre’s roof collapsing in the early hours of Thursday morning last week.

No one was injured when the roof caved in but officials say that had it happened during the day, there is little doubt people would have died as the centre would have been heaving with Christmas shoppers.

The centre has not opened since the incident and looks to remain shut until well into the new year because of fears for public safety.

A spokesperson at London & Associated Properties PLC which owns the centre said, “We do not yet know what is happening and cannot comment further. It will be closed for the foreseeable future.”

Shopkeepers who were looking forward to Christmas sales in what was the busiest week of the year are also counting the cost of the collapse.
