Shake-up at court as many cases moved to Hastings

Changes at Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court will come into effect next month and will see a number of cases usually held at the courtrooms being heard at Hastings.

From April 1 this means all new bail cases for adults in the Eastbourne area will no longer be dealt with at the Eastbourne court based in Old Orchard Road. The shake-up is partly to reduce trial delays.

A spokesperson for Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) said, “HMCTS, in conjunction with the judiciary and criminal justice partners, routinely reviews local listing arrangements, taking into account changes in workloads, to ensure the best use of our resources. From April 1 all new bail cases for adults in the Sussex Eastern Local Justice Area will be dealt with at Hastings Magistrates’ Court and all youth cases from the same area will be dealt with at Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court. The new listing arrangements take into account the comparative youth and adult workloads in each area; aims to reduce trials delays and promote efficiency by concentrating resources for particular types of cases in one location. Trials will continue to be heard at both courts.

“Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court will continue to trial the use of videolink technology to reduce unnecessary appearances in court and support the needs of victims and witnesses.”
