Severely decomposed body discovered at woman’s home

AN EASTBOURNE woman who was found dead in her bed could have been there for nearly a month, an inquest has heard.

Susan Perry’s body was severely decomposed when police broke into her Sydney Road home after a neighbour raised concerns.

An inquest into the 62-year-old’s death at Eastbourne Magistrates Court heard hundreds of empty bottles were found in the house and that Ms Perry had a history of an alcohol problem and had previously had a number of seizures.

In a statement neighbour Catherine Allen described the Eastbourne resident as warm, generous and very independent. She added that she thought her neighbour suffered from mental health problems.

She last spoke to Ms Perry at the beginning of October.

Police were called to the address on October 29 and could see mouldy fruit in one of the rooms and also noticed an unpleasant smell. They found the badly decomposed body of Ms Perry in bed. A TV magazine was found opened on the day of September 26 and this was also the last date a diary entry had been made which made reference to her feeling unwell.

Police said there were no signs of a struggle. A post mortem failed to find the cause of death because of how badly decomposed the body was.

Coroner Alan Craze recorded an open verdict.
