Seven-day cold snap sparks government pay-outs
IN THE light of the recent cold snap in Eastbourne the Government’s cold weather payments have been triggered.
After seven consecutive days with temperatures of zero degrees and below those eligible in Eastbourne will have a £25 credit paid into their account.
Cold weather payments were set up to help those in receipt of pension credits, income support, jobseekers allowance and employment and support allowance in periods of cold weather.
The money is designed to go towards the extra cost of heating during this period to ensure that the most vulnerable do not suffer hardship because of the cold.
Stephen Lloyd MP said, “I believe that these payments underline the Coalition Governments commitment to providing support for the elderly and most vulnerable members of our community who are disproportionately impacted upon by the cold weather.
“The payment was temporarily increased to £25 by the last Government and there were plans to reduce it to its original level but after a hard fight by the Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, who recently visited Eastbourne, this temporary increase was made permanent.”
