Search after clothes found near cliff edge

Clothes found by a cliff edge near Beachy Head led to volunteers from Newhaven’s RNLI lifeboat station carrying out a search.

The team was requested to launch by Solent Coastguard on Monday at 12.20pm to a report of a possible person over the cliff to the east of Birling Gap, after the clothing was spotted near a cliff edge.

Newhaven’s all-weather Severn Class lifeboat RNLB David and Elizabeth Acland was tasked to search from the second of the Seven Sisters west of Birling Gap along to Beachy Head and back.

The lifeboats inflatable “Y boat” was launched with two crew who completed a detailed search close to the shore whilst the main lifeboat searched further out.

No casualty was found and the lifeboat and Coastguards teams were stood down shortly before 1.45pm.
