Seaford: Work starts on rail crossing
CAMPAIGNERS calling for improvements to an unmanned rail crossing near Seaford are celebrating after learning works will get underway next month.
Residents have been calling for changes amid fears someone could get killed following several near misses at Tide Mills Level Crossing.
Jim Skinner, chairman of the Friends of Tide Mills, who has, along with Access in Seaford and Newhaven Committee, called for better access for tourists and residents, said the latest news was an end to a ‘true community wide effort’.
Mr Skinner said phase two of the crossing improvements would get underway on December 3, adding, “All pedestrian users of the crossing will at long last be able to access Tide Mills, this much-loved and special open space, some for the very first time, in much greater safety than for many years.
“This brings an end to a community wide effort to get the crossing upgraded, necessary to reflect the diverse range of visitors to Tide Mills now being experienced, from ‘ordinary’ pedestrians through to archaeologists, fishermen, surfers, families, cyclists and especially wheelchair users.”
The Gazette has previously reported Network Rail came up with a design for some extra wide self-closing gates.
The crossing will be closed from 11.45pm on December 3 until 7am on December 7.
Mr Skinner thanked everyone who supported the cause including local councils, Newhaven Port and Properties and the land owners.
