SEAFORD: Seaford gets its own radio station

Seahaven FM

Seahaven FM

A COMMUNITY radio station team in Seaford will enjoy an extra celebration during the festive season.

After years of hard work the radio station will finally take to the airwaves full time.

Seahaven FM was set up by businessman Nick Mallinson whose dream was to provide the community with local news on the radio.

Over the years the team of 60 volunteers have been helping to produce shows on 96.3FM, which can also be heard on the internet.

Four short-term FM broadcasts have taken place but in the New Year the station can be heard on 96.3FM 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Mr Mallinson said, “It’s been a long, hard slog and we’ve surmounted all kinds of bureaucratic and physical problems but got there in the end.

“Now we’ve got the transmitter on, everything is in place.”

The organisation, which recently had a second studio built at its base in Saxon Lane, is celebrating with a party on Sunday, January 9, with its official launch at 7am the next day.

Live programmes will broadcast from 7am until 11pm and there will be programmes on throughout the night. It is hoped that eventually the station can go live throughout the entire weekend.

Talking of the new venture Mr Mallinson added, “There won’t be any other radio station in Sussex that is as live as that apart from the BBC but its content is not all from Sussex.

“There were times we didn’t think we were going to make it but we never really gave up.”

The team is currently testing its permanent frequency ready for the launch next year.

A number of people and businesses have supported Seahaven FM since it began.

The town’s MP Norman Baker, who has a slot on the radio station which features a mix of jazz, blues and country, is one of them.

Mr Baker was delighted with the news. “This is a really good boost for Seaford and will make a significant, positive difference to the town, ” he said.

Since the first series of test internet broadcasts in February 2008 the radio station attracted a host of volunteers who have been helping out and hosting various shows, with the youngest aged 15.

The organisation is still keen for volunteers including presenters, administrative assistants and researchers. If you are interested call 891424. More details about the station at www.seahavenfm.com
