Seaford fundraising family backs cancer charity campaign
A FAMILY from Seaford which has been affected by cancer is backing a charity's campaign.
Emma Hatt and her sisters have been organising fundraising events since their mum Becky was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2007.
The 23-year-old spoke to the Gazette in the run-up to Mother's Day (March 14) to talk about her experience and the Breast Cancer Campaign which is asking people to support the cause by logging on to the website and take part in different activities which includes sending your mum a card, gift or text.
Emma, who lives with her mum and her mum's partner Glen Allen in Sherwood Road, said, "Mum had a lumpectomy in July 2007 and she then went on to have a mastectomy in September. She later found out it had spread and had 12 weeks worth of chemotherapy."
The fitness instructor said her mum is currently now in a 'five-year zone' where there is a possibility that the cancer could come back and she has regular six monthly check-ups. For now though the family is remaining positive and is continuing to fundraise for charity.
Emma, who has two sisters Jo, 25, and Nikki, 27, has taken part in a skydive, a 10k event and has also held aerobic classes where people can donate to the cause to raise awareness.
The Seaford resident, who is hoping to enjoy a family meal on Mother's Day, added, "Every month I donate 2 to the Breast Cancer Campaign and that's my gesture. It's so close to home because of when my mum was diagnosed and there's a lot of people around me that have had friends, parents or sisters that have had scares."
Becky, 47, who works at the Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford, will be taking part in a 5K event in June with Emma. She said, "I'm very healthy at the moment and touch wood it will stay like that. I do exercise every day and like going to the gym and that's what's helped keeping me going.
"It's always at the back of your mind but you have to get on with it.
"I'm trying to keep positive."
Talking of the campaign she added, "To me it's really important for our children, you don't know what's going to happen in the future and it seems to be getting more common, so the more people that help raise money the better."
You can also support the Breast Cancer Campaign this Mother's Day by texting 'FOR MUM' to 81400 to make a 1.50 donation. Or to find out more about sending a text and the other activities available visit: www.breastcancercampaign.org/formum for more information.
