Seaford: Fuel rises hit bus services

THE COMMUNITY is being asked its views on proposals to change bus services in the Seaford area.

The journeys are being reviewed after Renown Coaches gave notice to terminate some of the contracts the company holds to run supported services for East Sussex County Council (ESCC).

The reason behind this is the significant increases in fuel costs since they took on the contracts in 2009.

As a result changes on the Rider bus services - which are mainly on the Seaford, Newhaven and Lewes areas - are being looked into.

Services affected include:

l 119, 120, 123, 126, 128, 143, 145

l School journeys on 92A, 92B, 92C and 121.

The Planning & Highways Committee of Seaford Town Council discussed the issue at a meeting last month.

They said while they regretted the withdrawal of Renown they welcomed the 120 service continuing to run from Monday to Friday but had concerns over the lack of a Saturday service.

The Cuckmere Community Bus will be taking over the Seaford Town service (120), providing a similar timetable and the Saturday service will be retendered.

ESCC has been looking at the current use of all the bus services affected to help plan for replacements.

It has announced that due to budget limitations and rising costs affecting all bus operators, some less-used services are likely to be reduced.

But in response to comments from residents ESCC is also planning improvements to services.

Anyone who would like to find out more about the proposals and give their views can visit:

Comments can be sent in by post or email, to: East Sussex County Council, B2 Passenger Transport, Freepost LW43, Lewes BN7 1BR or email: busconsultations@eastsussex.gov.uk

The closing date for comments is February 3, 2012.

The revised services will come into effect from April 22 this year, following a competitive tendering process.
