Seaford crime falls despite murder inquiry

CRIME in the Lewes district has continued to fall despite a murder investigation being launched in Seaford.

Figures published on the Lewes District Crime Reduction Partnership newsletter said crime was decreasing with a reduction of 11 per cent for the current 12 month period compared to the previous year, which meant 563 fewer victims.

The news come following the death of 27-year-old Ahmed Remon Hayder, who lived with his parents and two brothers above an architect's shop in Sutton Park Road.

His body was discovered on February 1 and police are treating the incident as murder.

The report adds that there has been a reduction of 33 per cent of burglary to houses - 69 fewer victims, a reduction of 22 per cent for reports of criminal damage and a six per cent reduction of reports of violent crime.

The report said shoplifting offences had been rising throughout 2009, but following a series of co-ordinated operations and increased awareness by the community, the number of offences has continued to fall this year with a current reduction of 10 per cent compared to the previous 12 months.

District Commander Chief Inspector Natalie Carron said, "Although crime continues to reduce across the district we are not complacent and are working to ensure that these reductions are firmly embedded in every area of our work.

"The partnership is committed in its drive to increase community confidence. We continue to support the neighbourhood panels and very much want to increase the number of people involved in Neighbourhood Watch across the district.
