Seaford club receives cup in tribute to founder Bob

A CUP in memory of a Seaford resident who died earlier this year has been donated to the club he helped set up.

Bob Matthews, who passed away on July 28, was heavily involved with community groups in the town and was linked to many organisations over the years.

Later on in life the father-of-two became involved with the East Sussex Disability Association and to raise funds for the local branch he organised a New Age Kurling Club which continues to run today.

June Wood, secretary of the club, said that Bob was an 'inspiration' and one group of people in particular he had an impact on included DREAMS of Social Happiness, a social club in Littlehampton.

The group wanted to know about New Age Kurling and came to see the Seaford organisation in action and obtained funding for the venture. The group then had a cup made and invited the Seaford Kurlers to its venue for a match, before heading to the coast for another game.

Mrs Wood said, "The kurling club has been a great success for them and has helped a lot of people.

"They could not praise Bob and Sheila (Bob's wife) enough for going to them and encouraging them so much and giving lots of advice as to how to go about setting the club up.

"The people who run the club are Pat and John Horne. The organisers of both clubs got on very well from the outset and have now become friends.

"When Bob died I telephoned them to let them know. They were deeply upset. After a quick committee meeting we decided to ask them if they would consider naming the cup in memory of Bob.

"They decided that they would wish to donate a special cup in his memory and could we decide on a name. They wished it to be an in-house cup for the Seaford Kurlers."

The group has decided in view of Bob's amazing achievement in the face of lots of disabilities, that it would like to name it The Bob Matthews Achievement Cup. This leaves it open to be presented to either a person or for any in-house competitions for which the club thinks has been a special achievement.

The team were presented with the new addition following an unexpected visit from Pat and John last week.
