Seaford 2010 carnival put on ice

THE POPULAR Seaford Carnival will be not be going ahead this year due to a lack of volunteers.

The annual event, which takes place in May and has been organised by the Seahaven Lioness Club for the past four years, helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity and was a highlight on the town's calendar of activities.

Chris Clements, president of Seahaven Lioness Club, said, "We had to make this decision after a lot of soul-searching. Our numbers have just reduced from last year and that is because of the usual things and people left for valid reasons. There has also been a lot of poor health in the club which has restricted people from doing things.

"We decided that this year unless we could give it 100 per cent we wouldn't go ahead.

"We've enjoyed doing it and it's been a great challenge."

Chris added that it would be difficult for another club to take on organising a carnival for this year but that it was hoped the Lionesses would be able to go ahead with the event for 2011.

Last year's carnival helped to raise around 2,300 and included a procession, stalls and funfair.

Seaford mayor Councillor Tracy Willis said, "When I heard what they told me, I felt sympathy with the decision that they have made because it is very hard to keep a committee going.

"A lot of their ladies are much maturer in age and they are quite happy to fundraise but some people work and it's difficult when you're trying to fundraise and do other things, I know exactly how hard it is.

"If you can't get the volunteers to do it then it means the job is made even harder.

"While I think it is a really sad loss for Seaford I know how hard these ladies and organisations have worked to make it successful and no-one realises how much goes on behind the scenes.

"It's sad but I fully understand the reasons they decided not to go ahead with it. It does take a lot of organisation. I would like to see it reinstated but you need volunteers to do that."
