Seaford marathon goers battle mist and rain

DESPITE dismal weather the return of the Seaford Marathon received a positive response from those who took part.

Runners had to contend with both rain and mist on the 26-mile downland route which takes participants through Alfriston, Firle and Seaford.

The marathon, organised by the Seaford Striders, came back to the town after a year's absence and started from Seaford Fire Station at 9am.

Tim Hutchings, a Commonwealth Games medallist, was on hand to open the event and present trophies to the three leading ladies and men.

Bill Young, one of the founder members of Seaford Striders, said, "We had 115 people finish and there was a small group of about 10-15 people that were on high grounds along the South Downs Way towards Alfriston.

"There was a lot against the people that took part but I give credit to them."

He added that one of the organisers had received several positive emails from those who took part.

The Fire Fighters Charity was the beneficiary of 75 per cent of the funds raised through this year's race entries, sponsorship and donations and it is thought around 1,500 has been received for the cause. The remaining money will go to Seaford Striders.
