Seaford man remains critical after shooting
POLICE were this morning continuing their investigations after a dramatic armed seige in Seaford on Saturday night in which one man was shot after an exchange of fire with officers.
A 62-year-old man from the town was today recovering at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with what are described as life-threatening injuries. He was said to be stable, but critical.
The Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team have said they are investigating attempted murder of police officers, while the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Police were called to the home in North Way, Seaford at 7.10pm on Saturday evening after reports of a domestic incident and a woman left the house a short time later.
Officers spent several hours negotiating with the man who, at 1am, left the house and shots were exchanged with armed officers from the Surrey and Sussex Tactical Firearms unit.
The wounded man went back into the house where he was given first aid. Two police officers were also slightly injured during the incident, but these were not gunshot wounds. A shotgun was recovered from the scene.
During the seige, roads in the area were sealed off and some residents were evacuated to a nearby school.
Following the shooting, the Independent Police Complaints Commission is now investigaing. A spokesman from Sussex Police said: “Matters of this nature are always referred to the IPCC and are not indicative of any wrong doing on the part of Sussex Police, who welcome the outside scrutiny and will work fully to support the investigation.”
