Seaford fireman plaque unveiled
A PLAQUE was unveiled at the weekend in memory of a Seaford fireman after his family called for a fitting tribute to be created in his honour.
The family of Frederick Mace joined Seaford MP Norman Baker and Seaford mayor Councillor Tracy Willis on Saturday for the ceremony.
Last year Fireman Mace's granddaughter Janet Vacher, of Vale Road, called for a memorial to be created in the 42-year-old's honour.
Her grandfather raced to the scene of the old Empire Cinema that was based in Sutton Road in the town after the building caught fire in 1939.
He was at the top of a water tower when the wind blew it over.
Mrs Vacher found out more about the firefighter from a newspaper cutting her mother had and was keen to see a lasting tribute created.
Her dream came true on Saturday when Mr Baker unveiled a plaque on a wall on the side of Phoenix Beauty which is situated next to where the old Empire Cinema was.
Town crier Peter White travelled to the unveiling on a preserved 1939 fire engine which originated from Newhaven.
He followed representatives from the fire service including the deputy chief officer of the East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and local borough commander Garry Collins.
A witness to the fire that took place 71 years ago was also at the ceremony.
Kay Turvey, chairman of Seaford Museum gave a introductory speech, which was followed by a talk from historian Kevin Gordon who gave a history of firefighting.
Mr Baker also gave a speech about the quality of firemen and their dedication.
