School goes green with solar power

Students at Seaford Head Community College officially switched on their £20,000 solar panels.

They were installed thanks to funding from The Co-operative Group, which sent one of its colourful climate change characters, Sunny Solar, to help launch the rooftop panels.

The panels are half-funded by the Group's 1m Green Energy for Schools scheme with match-funding from the government's Low Carbon Building Programme (LCBP).

The college is among 100 schools across the UK that has been successfully nominated by Co-operative staff and members to receive the solar panels.

George Steadman, manager of The Co-operative food store in Seaford, said, "This clean, silent technology will help educate Seaford Head Community College pupils about the measures we can take to help combat climate change as well as reducing the school's reliance on fossil fuels.

"We hope the switching on of these rooftop solar panels will give the whole community a jolt by sending out a strong message about the urgent need to do what we can to tackle climate change."

The 24 photovoltaic panels should generate around 3,300 kWh of electricity each year — enough to power a school computer for 33,000 hours or to make 180,000 cups of tea for thirsty teachers — saving around two tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Headteacher Lynton Golds said, "We are proud to be among the schools leading the way on renewable energy through this generous Co-operative initiative.

"This project is really encouraging our pupils to take an interest in climate change and to think about other ways we can help the environment. "

Student council representative Adam Sage added, "The school council has been fighting to make the school greener, therefore it is brilliant that we are getting solar panels as they will help save energy and contribute to saving the planet."
