School governor puts on walking boots for bid

A governor of Seaford Head Community College is taking part in a sponsored walk to support the college's Specialist Status and continuing plans to improve facilities at both the Arundel Road and Steyne Road sites.

Russell Adfield will be taking part in a trek of the Western Highlands in Scotland at the end of September.

The six-day challenge involves walking 65 miles from Ard Lui to Fort William and, weather permitting, an ascent of Ben Nevis — the highest mountain in the British Isles.

Gavin Burt, who has also kindly agreed to support the college, will accompany Russell.

Mr Adfield said, "Obtaining Specialist Status is the start of a new beginning for the college and will result in new investment.

"But, there is always so much more we would like to do and provide for the students that government funding does not cover.

"As the governor linked to the PE department I am really keen to see the changing and shower facilities refurbished —but this is going to cost around 10,000.

"We also need new outside seating for the students and a sound system for the new dance studio – but this is another 8-10,000.

"Our priority is always to provide the best education and opportunities for our students but in doing so our funds are so stretched that these additional items – which would so greatly enhance the college's whole environment, have to be put on the back burner.

"To try and raise enough money to even contribute to these costs, let alone meet them, is a real challenge.

"But I hope the local community feel they can help us help the college invest in our students' futures".

Principal Lynton Golds added, "This is a wonderful opportunity for the college and on behalf of all the governors, staff, students and parents associated with Seaford Head Community College I wish Russell Adfield and his friend Gavin Burt a successful walk across the Western Highlands.

"I am sure the support for this fundraising event will be tremendous."
