Sale is off as pier draws more visitors

THE PIER owner hoping to sell the attraction for £5.5million has taken it off the market after a successful summer.

The Grade II* listed structure, owned by Six Piers Ltd, was described as 'iconic' when it was put on the market in June. However, it has failed to attract an appropriate buyer.

Richard Baldwin from Humberts Leisure, the chartered surveyors marketing the 140-year-old pier, said, "We marketed the pier extensively and had a huge amount of interest but an appropriate buyer was not found.

"Rather than just leaving it on the market, my clients have decided to continue trading off the back of what has been a very successful summer."

It is thought leisure facilities in tourist resorts across the UK did well this summer due to a rising number of people spending their holidays in the UK instead of going abroad.

An Eastbourne Borough Council spokesperson said, "We are very pleased to hear that Six Piers is not selling Eastbourne Pier and after a very busy summer as the staycation continues to rise, I am sure that the owners see it as a top landmark for investment.

"UK holidays are on the increase and Eastbourne is very proud of its pier as an iconic feature for the town that is a popular attraction with the four million visitors we receive every year.

"The recent addition of the Victorian Tea Rooms to Eastbourne Pier suggest that Six Piers are keen to continue investment in it and maintain its status as one of the country's few and finest surviving piers.

"We would like the owners to continue their investment and take on board residents' views on how or what they should do with the pier in future."

English Heritage has described the pier as one of the best in Britain and in May it was decided the 1,000ft landmark should be upgraded from a Grade II listed building to a Grade II*.

At the time culture minister Barbara Follet described the town's pier as a 'Victorian masterpiece'.
