Sainsbury’s to open a new branch

Sainsbury’s is to open a store in Eastbourne.
The supermarket giant has taken over five adjoining empty units in Seaside on the corner of Belmore Road opposite the Territorial Army Headquarters and construction work is now underway to create one large store.
It will be the third branch the company has opened in Eastbourne and be a Sainsbury’s Local store, open from 7am-11pm seven days a week.
Sainsbury’s, which has other branches in Broadwater Way, Hampden Park, and in Eastbourne’s Arndale Centre, say the new store will bring new full and part time jobs to the area hopes it will revitalise the area, which has seen an increase in the number of businesses closing its doors in the recent economic downturn.
A spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council also said the authority welcomed Sainsbury’s to the area.
He said, “The council welcomes the opportunity to bring these vacant units back into use, creating new jobs and helping reverse the decline in commercial and business activity in Seaside.
“The new store will help maintain a range of shops within a sustainable location to meet the needs of the local community, strengthening the vitality and viability of Seaside District Shopping Centre.”
Mike Reid from commercial agents Reid & Dean, who negotiated the Sainsbury’s deal, said, “The completion of this development will make a significant contribution to the appearance and vitality of this part of the town.”
The five empty units were used in the past as a newsagent, hairdressers, laundry and estate agency but have been vacant for some time.
The Q Ball Snooker Club above the empty units is also set to have a new lease of life.
Last year planning permission was granted for the former club to be converted into flats. On the first and second floors of the building there will be eight one bedroom flats and four two bedroom flats.
