Saddle up for cycling fest on the prom

EASTBOURNE Cycling Festival is coming to the Western Lawns on May 19 and 20.

The event is the second festival and is open to competitive cyclists, people who ride socially or those who just have a passing interest in cycling and other sports.

Organisers say there will be lots to keep the children entertained, making it a great, healthy day out for the family.

The first ever Eastbourne Duathlon will take place on the Saturday, May 19, consisting of a flat run course on the promenade and a challenging but scenic bike course on the roads leading up to Beachy Head and back around Birling Gap.

Despite the hills on the ride, the race is a short distance – 2.5K run, 18K bike ride and 2.5K run.

Sunday’s events include a series of criterium road races on a 750m closed road circuit which promise to be exciting for both racers and spectators.

Those looking for a longer distance challenge have the option of a 50, 80 or even 106 mile ride in Eastbourne and surrounding areas as part of the Eastbourne Sportive.

A new addition this year is the Eastbourne 5K race which allows runners and joggers to be part of the Cycling Festival too.

A flat, fast, traffic-free course on the promenade makes it a great race for beginners and also experienced runners looking to post a fast time. Entries are available in advance and on the day.

In addition to the race schedule, there are many other events throughout the weekend including fun rides organised by Eastbourne cycling group Bespoke and a group mountain bike ride on the South Downs in support of the Alzheimer’s Society.

There will also be plenty of opportunity to burn off a few calories without even leaving the Western Lawns at the Rollapaluza static bike racing or the Watt Bike Challenge.

Children may also enjoy ‘blinging their bike’ at the decorating stand or even getting a little exercise whilst making a healthy snack on the Smoothie Bike.

There will also be refreshment and exhibitor stands, including the festival’s main sponsor The Tri Store.
