Roundabout memorial to be unveiled to honour war dead

A new memorial plaque commemorating local people who have lost their lives in the service of the country since 1945 will be unveiled in Eastbourne at the War Memorial roundabout on October 28.

The plaque will be positioned facing west towards South Street and will be similar in design to the existing commemorations to casualties of World War I and World War II.

Councillor Steve Wallis, who came up with the idea of the new plaque, said, “Very sadly, brave men and women continue to pay the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country. Accordingly, the new plaque will commemorate people from the town who have given their lives since 1945.

The War Memorial roundabout provides a focus for our deep respect and sympathies and I hope that as many local people as possible will join me on October 28 to honour all our fallen heroes. I would like to thank all those who have been involved in this project, and for the cross-party support it has received.”

The ceremony will also be attended by members of the Territorial Army in Eastbourne, veterans, standard bearers and cadet forces and civic dignitaries. Road closures will be in place.
