Residents demand better road safety
MORE than 100 Alfriston residents turned out to a meeting on Friday to call for better road safety in the village.
The event was organised by Dr June Goodfield, chairman and founder of SAFE (Save Alfriston For Everyone), who like many villagers, is concerned about traffic congestion in Alfriston and the damage caused to property and injuries to people.
The meeting was held at Deans Place Hotel and guests included Seaford MP Norman Baker and representatives from the county council included lead member for transport and the environment Matthew Lock and Rupert Clubb, director of transport and the environment.
Also in attendance was Alfriston county councillor Nick Bennett and representatives from the police.
SAFE has been working hard for a year collecting data and has also had a report commissioned by a structural engineer.
Different topics that were discussed during the evening included residents asking if a 20mph limit through the High Street could be introduced, better signage and a shared space concept where residents and pedestrians are given as much space as the traffic.
Previous incidents have seen an elderly resident knocked over after getting clipped by a wing mirror and last week there was an accident after a small coach and a vehicle were involved in a collision.
Police urged residents to take down notes of any incidents that took place and said they would look into the matter.
