Residents will have say over needs in housing

MORE than 30,000 of Wealden's residents, including all rural households, are being asked about their housing needs and hopes in a postal survey that will help shape the future of housing in the district.

"The council needs to understand what sorts of homes are needed now and in the future so that we can plan effectively," said Amanda Hodge, head of housing services at Wealden District Council.

"The more households that reply and the more they tell us about their needs, the more accurate we can be.

"I would ask everyone who receives a questionnaire to complete it. Since we last carried out a Housing Needs Survey in 2004 we have seen sharp rises in house prices continue, followed by the credit crunch. "

The questionnaire asks for:

• Basic information about the individuals and their family.

• The size and number of rooms of their current home.

• Reasons for moving to their current home.

• Support needs of their household; and

• Future plans – whether the household as a whole or individual members of the household plan to move in the future, and if so, where to, and what type of housing might be needed.

The results of the survey will help the Council to bid for Government funding for local housing projects and will be important in drawing up Wealden's Local Development Framework which will guide future development in the District to 2026.

All households in rural parishes will be sent a questionnaire, together with a randomly -selected sample of residents from the five main Wealden towns so as to provide a statistically representative cross-section of the views of local residents. The research will be carried out by Fordham Research on behalf of the Council. Personal details about respondents will not be shared with anyone else.

All households that complete the survey will be entered into a prize draw, with one lucky person winning 100 in cash.

The survey goes out in early June. If you receive a questionnaire in the post please return it by July 17 in the pre-paid envelope.
