A fed-up father-of-three said the amount of rubbish being dumped in a lane near his home was a ‘disgrace’ and is desperate for the area to be properly cleared up.

Ashley Barton says anything from microwaves to trolleys are left in Seabeach Lane and at one point an abandoned car was there for several weeks before he and a friend pushed it out on to the main road for it to be taken away. The 41-year-old said the lane which stretches along the back of part of Seaside had been used as a fly-tipping area for years. He added, “It’s such a fire hazard. It’s such a mess. The whole of that alleyway is a disgrace. Some of the rubbish is four foot high in places.”

Mr Barton says he shifts some of the rubbish in the lane every couple of weeks but that a proper plan of action is needed, adding, “I don’t even let my children play out there now. People used to use the lane as a rat run but because of the rubbish they can’t do that.”

A spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council said council officers had visited the lane and seen some rubbish on private property and were due to speak to the owner of the property. They added, “We take the issue of fly-tipping on council land very seriously. As part of Customer First, our new way of delivering services, we will be making it easier for residents to report fly-tipping and rubbish, including a new mobile phone app called Report It which will allow people to send us a photo when fly-tipping occurs, prompting one of our team to rectify the problem. Our new Neighbourhood First officers will also be on hand to meet people in their own communities to hear first-hand about local issues.”
