Rescuers save deer caught on fence

A VOLUNTEER animal rescuer from Seaford was involved in saving the life of a female deer.

Greg Holliday, who gives up his time to assist East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS), joined the charity's founder Trevor Weeks to help free the deer from fencing near Brightling.

But they were unable to save the deer's baby, which they found 200 yards away hanging from the same fencing.

When the adult deer was spotted hanging by one of its back legs from the fencing, Greg and Trevor were on site within 40 minutes and set about cutting her free and providing vital lifesaving first aid.

WRAS's veterinary ambulance was driven into the field to get rescue equipment close enough and Greg and Trevor held the stricken animal while it was cut free.

Greg said, "Handfuls of fur came out in our hands as we tried to get her on to the stretcher.

"I couldn't believe the state of her, it looked disgusting."

The deer had her wounds treated and bandaged at the scene before being rushed to vets in Heathfield.

Trevor said, "They were great at the vets. She was placed on an intravenous drip to help deal with the shock.

"I had never seen a deer so badly bruised before from such a situation."

The deer was then transferred into WRAS's veterinary ambulance, while still on the drip, and rushed St Tiggywinkles deer unit in Buckinghamshire.

Trevor said, "We carried the deer into the veterinary centre where she was checked over and treated before being bedded down in one of their special deer stables.

"Their facilities are brilliant and I can't thank the staff at St Tiggywinkles enough for their help and support.

"The deer is now in good hands and we hope she will make a full recovery."
