Rescuers see car plunge over cliff

WHILE coastguards were recovering the body of a man at the foot of Beachy Head on Monday afternoon, a vehicle drove off the cliffs at high speed landing just metres away from them.

The incident happened about 4.30pm when the Eastbourne Cliff Rescue Team were preparing to recover a body from Boulder Bank, west of the lighthouse.

A red Toyota Rav 4, driven by a man, landed upside down 550ft below the cliffs.

The Eastbourne Coastguard Team called for urgent assistance to deal with the two incidents and help was provided by both Birling Gap and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Teams, Eastbourne Inshore Lifeboat, all weather boats and the police helicopter.

The rescue teams were on the scene for more than six hours and all units stood down at 10.30pm.
