Fundraisers who took part in this year’s Race For Life are being urged to return their cash as soon as possible after around a third of people who completed last year’s event did not hand in their money.

A total of 1,721 women tackled the course in memory of family and friends who have suffered from cancer – with every runner paying an entrance fee.

However, organisers are keen to stress that the majority of the money generated comes from the subsequent sponsorship and that, with proceeds going towards the ongoing fight against around 200 forms of cancer, people need to make sure they hand over every last penny.

Suzi Dent, the event’s spokesman for this area, said, “Race for Life in Eastbourne was a fantastic event. We want to say a heart-felt thanks to everyone who took part or supported our participants.

“Now the big day is over, we are asking our supporters to take one last step – by returning the money they have raised so that we can go on funding much needed research.

“Last year, a third of the women who took part didn’t return any sponsorship money. As the number of people diagnosed with cancer in the south east continues to rise we need the support of local people now more than ever.

“So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible.”

It was a sentiment shared by a team of colleagues from Tesco in Lottbridge Drove (pictured) who were among the almost 2,000 women to take part after the store name Cancer Research UK as its charity of the year and who are encouraging people to send their cash in.
