A derelict pub in Hampden Park looks set to be demolished and new houses and flats built in its place.

Developers have unveiled plans for the site of The Pubb in Mountfield Road, known affectionately locally as the Grotty Lotty for a number of years.

In its heyday the Lottbridge Arms was a popular pub and eatery but in recent years struggled to get customers through the door and before it finally closed was called The Pubb.

According to a planning application into Eastbourne Borough Council, developers Trinity Homes in Hargreaves Road want permission to develop the site with affordable housing.

They plan to demolish the existing building and have designs for seven one-bedroom flats, two three-bedroom houses, four two-bedroom houses and one two-bedroom wheelchair accessible flat.

A spokesperson at Trinity Homes said the redevelopment of the site would provide much needed housing in the area and added, “The Pubb, like many public houses has been closed for quite some time and has had extensive marketing but with no real interest as establishments like this are struggling all over the country to remain open. This reflects the change in people’s desire to visit pubs and therefore the profitability of many public houses.

“Over the past few years such establishments have been closing in vast numbers as they are no longer viable from a financial point of view.

“This site however will be developed to generate social homes for people who are in desperate need of housing and therefore continues with what could loosely be called a community use.”

Objections have already been raised about the redevelopment with opponents saying it will add to existing traffic problems and they do not want to see the building pulled down.
