Eastbourne’s Bonfire Society, which plans one of the major fireworks displays in the town’s calendar, say it is disappointed at alack of support from businesses.

A forward planning event was held by the society at the Crown and Anchor pub on the seafront last week at which the society was looking for backing from businesses for the torchlight procession and fireworks display for charity in October.

Eastbourne’s mayor Mike Thompson and the town’s tourism chief Carolyn Heaps went along and said they too were disappointed with the turnout.

David Oliver, from the society, said, “Unfortunately attendance from the business sector was poor despite widespread invitations and previous publicity.

“A presentation of this year’s October event was given by our secretary Nick Morris followed by Pete Thorley of Matthew 25 Mission and Chris Downland of Children With Cancer Fund, our two chosen charities for this year, who outlined the work their respective charities endeavour to achieve locally.

“The mayor praised the society’s work staging such an event but said how disappointed he was in the lack of support and attendance by the business and hotel sector of the town. Councillor Heaps shared his disappointment and said the October event was a great asset and credit to the town bridging the summer and Christmas seasons.”
