Pooches pound the streets for sponsored Sovereign Harbour walk

More than 100 people, accompanied by more than 40 dogs, took part in the annual sponsored harbour walk around Sovereign Harbour.

The event took place for its second year on Sunday (April 22) and was organised by the Rotary Club of Sovereign Harbour.

This year, the walk was in support of the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity.

The walkers were accompanied by Stephen Lloyd MP with the town’s mascot Barnaby Bee, the Mayor of Eastbourne, Cllr Carolyn Heaps, all of the Sovereign Ward councillors, Eastbourne Borough Council’s dog welfare officer Sue Criddle, with her dog Polar, and the Eastbourne Borough FC mascot, Sammy Sunshine.

The sun shone, and the weather stayed pleasantly warm for the event, which took walkers around the Sovereign Harbour marina promenades, finishing at the Waterfront in time for lunch.

Rotary Club president Peter Thomas said, “It was good to see so many people walking in support of this worthwhile charity, and the dogs added an extra dimension to last year’s event.

“Considering how many dogs there were, they were remarkably well behaved and a credit to their responsible owners.”
