Polling day closes in for Meads voters
MEADS voters will go to the polls next week to elect a new member on Eastbourne Borough Council.
Polling stations in the area will be open from 10am-10pm on Thursday, May 31 and five candidates have thrown their hats into the ring.
The successful candidate will replace Meads councillor Nigel Goodyear who quit his seat last month to campaign to become the new police and crime commissioner for Sussex.
Those standing in the Meads by-election are Caroline Ansell for the Conservative Party, Ian Cameron for the UK Independence Party, Dennis Scard for the Labour Party, Liberal Democrat Gerard Thompson and Keith Gell, who is standing as an Independent.
Conservative Caroline Ansell, of Baldwin Avenue, is a 41-year-old teacher, school inspector and mother of three boys. She is a prolific campaigner.
UKIP’s Ian Cameron has lived in Eastbourne since he was a child and lives in Naomi Close. He has stood in various elections and is hoping for success this time.
Labour’s Dennis Scard is a long-time party campaigner and lives in Cranborne Avenue. He too has stood as a candidate in various elections in previous years.
Keith Gell, of St John’s Road, is another familiar campaigner in Eastbourne and is standing as an independent candidate.
Liberal Democrat Gerard Thompson lives in Upper Avenue and is a party political campaign manager in Eastbourne.
The successful candidate will join forces with Meads councillors and take their place on Eastbourne Borough Council until the council is re-elected in May 2015.
